HVAC Duct Machinery for Hydrogen Production Facilities
316L stainless SBAL-V auto duct lines, SBTF spiral tubeformers, TDF flange formers and welded duct equipment for hydrogen production facilities: electrolyser building ventilation (alkaline, PEM, SOEC, AEM), ATEX/IECEx hazardous area HVAC, compressor and gas conditioning, liquid hydrogen cryogenic plant, green ammonia synthesis loop integration. Australian Hydrogen Headstart programme is reshaping global green H2 capex, and the mechanical fabricators delivering the duct package need stainless-capable duct lines.
Hydrogen production HVAC at a glance
Hydrogen has a lower flammability limit (LFL) of 4% by volume in air and a wide flammable range up to 75%, making explosion risk the dominant design driver for hydrogen facility HVAC. Combined with the requirement for hydrogen embrittlement-resistant materials (316L stainless rather than carbon steel or galvanised), specific ATEX/IECEx zoning (Zone 1 in electrolyser stack enclosures, Zone 2 in room general atmosphere, Zone 0 inside H2 storage), and the cryogenic challenge of liquid hydrogen at -253°C, hydrogen facility HVAC is one of the most technical industrial environments for duct fabrication.
The current global wave of hydrogen investment is anchored by the Australian Hydrogen Headstart programme (USD 2 billion federal funding, 2023), the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (AUD 2/kg green H2 for 10 years), and major project pipelines in Pilbara (Asian Renewable Energy Hub at 26 GW), Murchison (5 GW), Central Queensland (CQ-H2 10 GW), and the Hunter Valley (Origin H2 Hub 1 GW initial). European green H2 capex (Iberdrola, Lhyfe, Air Liquide, Aurubis Hamburg, Hyporta Brunsbuettel) and North American (Plug Power, Air Products Louisiana, Hy Stor Mississippi) add multi-billion-dollar HVAC duct demand through 2030.

Frequently asked questions
What ATEX/IECEx zone classification applies to hydrogen facility HVAC?
Hydrogen has a lower flammability limit (LFL) of 4% by volume in air and a wide flammable range up to 75%. Standard zoning: Zone 1 (continuously present) inside electrolyser cell stack enclosures, Zone 2 (occasionally present) in electrolyser room general atmosphere, Zone 0 (continuously present) inside H2 storage vessels and pipe interiors. North American equivalent: Class I Division 1 (Zone 1), Class I Division 2 (Zone 2), Class I Group B (hydrogen). Standards: AS/NZS 60079 series (Australia/NZ), EN 60079 (Europe), NEC Article 500/502/505 (US), API RP 500/505 (offshore). Equipment in zones must carry appropriate Ex marking; HVAC fans serving hazardous areas typically Ex eb d (increased safety) or Ex db (flameproof).
What materials are required for hydrogen-exposed duct?
316L stainless steel is the standard for HVAC ducts in hydrogen-exposed areas. Carbon steel and galvanized G275 suffer hydrogen embrittlement — not suitable for sustained H2 exposure. Copper and brass should be avoided in some hydrogen environments due to amidation reactions with anhydrous ammonia (in green ammonia synthesis facilities). Aluminium 6061 is acceptable for purely structural applications. Most facility HVAC (electrolyser room ventilation) is on the air side rather than the H2 side, so 316L stainless is sufficient; specialty H2-pipe-grade alloys are used by the H2 process piping discipline rather than HVAC.
Which hydrogen production technologies have what HVAC requirements?
Alkaline electrolysis (KOH electrolyte): mature technology, 70-80% efficiency, lower capex. HVAC: standard electrolyser room ventilation 6-12 ACH, ATEX Zone 2. PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane): higher current density, dynamic response (suitable for renewable load following), more sensitive to feed water purity. HVAC: similar electrolyser room ventilation; tighter water quality control. SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell): high temperature 700-850°C, high efficiency 80-90%, suitable for waste heat integration. HVAC: high-temperature exhaust handling, integration with steam reformer or DRI plant. AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane): emerging technology, lower capex than PEM. HVAC: similar to PEM.
Does Australia have major hydrogen projects?
Yes. Australia is positioning as a global green hydrogen leader with one of the largest project pipelines in the world. Asian Renewable Energy Hub (Pilbara, 26 GW solar/wind powering green H2/NH3 production), Western Green Energy Hub (50 GW concept, near Eucla), Murchison Hydrogen Renewables (5 GW concept), Stanwell Central Queensland Hydrogen (CQ-H2, 10 GW concept), Origin Hunter Valley H2 Hub (1 GW initial), Australian Government Hydrogen Headstart programme USD 2 billion federal funding (2023). Plus the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (HPTI) at AUD 2/kg green H2 for 10 years from final investment decision.
What about cryogenic liquid hydrogen (LH2) facility HVAC?
LH2 boils at -253°C (lower than LNG -162°C). LH2 facility design adds: BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) risk requiring additional pressure relief and venting, double-walled vacuum-insulated process piping, dedicated cryogenic plant building HVAC at ambient temperature (the cryogenic equipment is contained within insulated transfer lines and storage tanks; building HVAC is for personnel comfort and electrical equipment cooling). Loading and unloading bay HVAC must include H2 leak detection and high-velocity ceiling exhaust to clear any leak quickly. Specific projects: Kawasaki Heavy LH2 carrier development, Air Liquide LH2 facilities.
How does green ammonia synthesis affect HVAC design?
Many Australian and global green H2 projects target green ammonia (NH3) as the export carrier (easier liquefaction at -33°C than LH2 at -253°C, plus existing global ammonia infrastructure). Green ammonia synthesis adds: ammonia synthesis loop with dedicated HVAC at ambient temperature for catalyst conditioning, ammonia leak detection (NH3 has 25 ppm OEL, fatal at >300 ppm), copper-free duct material selection (NH3 reacts with copper), separate exhaust for synthesis loop venting events. A 316L stainless SBAL-V suits green ammonia synthesis loop ventilation.
What is the typical Taokron machinery configuration for a hydrogen project?
Electrolyser building HVAC (largest scope): SBAL-V auto duct line in 316L stainless variant + SBTF stainless tubeformer for round duct. Compressor and gas conditioning room: SBAL-V galvanized variant for general HVAC plus 316L stainless variant near hydrogen-exposed equipment. LH2 cryogenic plant: SBAL-V galvanized for ambient-temperature plant building. Green ammonia synthesis loop: SBAL-V 316L stainless plus orbital TIG welded round duct for the most aggressive ammonia exposure areas. Control room (positive-pressure refuge): SBAL-V galvanized standard, redundant cooling. Maintenance workshop: SBAL-V galvanized standard.
What is the lead time for hydrogen project HVAC equipment?
Hydrogen project construction cycle is 24-36 months from FID to first H2 production, with HVAC fitout in the final 8-12 months. Standard Taokron machinery lead time: 90-120 days build time (including FAT), sea freight to the nearest Australian port or to Singapore for Asia-Pacific regional distribution (sailing time depends on the route and is confirmed in the quotation), 5-10 days customs and inland trucking, 5-10 days commissioning. Total order-to-production typically 5-6 months. For Pilbara-region Australian projects, the machine is landed at the nearest port and trucked to site, and air freight is also viable for urgent commissioning support.
